Roller Derby was among one of the first roller sports to be successful on the professional level. The game originated as an endurance competition between couples in Chicago in 1935. The teams could circle a rink that is banked a distance (57,000 laps) which was stated to equal a trip across the United States. A couple of years after Roller Derby was restructured as a contact sport with two teams, each comprising five women and five men. In alternating intervals, the guys would compete against the guys and the girls versus the girls. A designated skater for each side would try to pass many members of the opposite team as possible throughout the period of time, while teammates would work to block or slow the other team.

Audiences responded to the speed,
violence, and theatricality of the game (feuds were often scripted), and the
spectacle was hugely popular during the 1940s and'50s. Professional Roller

inline skates in the 1980s had a major effect on roller sports. The improved

hockey, is played with a small hard ball, quad skates, and curved rods much
like those utilized in Field hockey, and the sport's rules are derived chiefly
from polo. Inline Roller hockey uses lots of the rules of ice hockey, and equipment
like sticks, and a puck which used in Ice Hockey. Skaters and competitions
associated with skateboarding adopted. These sports, sometimes called
competitive roller-skating, include street design, which involves riding
through urban environments and performing tricks off stairs, rails, and other
structures, and vertical design, which involves airborne acrobatics performed
ramps or in a half-pipe (a U-shaped skating structure).
